"Wormax" (Gameplay video) is a browser-based massive multiplayer game that has your character controlling a multi-segmented worm creature. The play field is laden with colored balls that serve as food; consume enough food and your worm avatar grows in size. The main goal of Wormax.io is to make it to the top of the score leaderboard and to see how long you can maintain that position.
Wormax controls are very simple. While your worm is always moving, you can left-click in a direction to redirect your worm into that direction. Additionally, you can use three abilities by pressing Q, W and E. The Q button allows you to accelerate, deducting 10 points per second of activation. The W button allows you to stop your worm in place for as long as you keep it pressed down and up to five seconds. The E button grants your worm five seconds of invisibility and invincibility to other worms. These abilities are unlocked at 11, 100 and 500 points, respectively.
Beyond a trio of abilities, players can augment their worms by colliding with special power-ups. These include: A pick-up that adds 300 points. Making your worm toxic for one minute; anyone who attempts to eat your remains becomes poisoned and loses points equal to your score, to a maximum reduction of 10 points. 20% food grabbing reach for one minute. A 10% increase in vision for one minute. Immunity to score loss while accelerating for one minute.
While Wormax.io's visual offerings are rather simplistic, it is entirely silent. While your default avatar's coloring is randomly generated, signing into the game through a "Facebook," "Twitter" or "vk" account will grant you free skins to make your worm stand out from the others. While you can play the game for free, it encourages you to register an account to pay for a premium mode. Premium mode halves your losses and bolsters your power-up effects by half. Whether you play for free or with a registered account, you can always rename your worm avatar each session.
Wormax.io is another entry in the series of multiplayer survival challenge games ending with an ".io" in their name. Thankfully, its front page offers a link to an encyclopedia to explain every detail of the game. Just put on some music, get some friends and compete for the high score.
